July 20, Kim Seung-jin was appointed as an honorary ambassador for
the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries해양수산부. MBC’s Documentary Special
aired his story on June 29. He became the first Korean to travel
around the world by yacht without stopping at ports. He is also
the sixth person to share this record.
The 53-year-old former documentary producer spent all his savings
to purchase a used, non-powered yacht named Arapani. He departed
on Oct. 19, 2014 from the Waemok Port in South Chungcheong Province,
with the intent of inspiring people with a message of hope.
During
his voyage, he had to overcome many difficulties. For example, he
had to endure rough waves and avoid floating ice. He passed the
equator twice, which is a prerequisite for the world record. He
documented his time in the yacht by taking photos and recording
videos.
He finally came back to his starting point on May 16, 2015. His
success touched many people.
